What is Funding Rate? — Why Money Moves Just by Holding Futures

Funding rate is a periodic fee exchanged between long and short traders in perpetual futures. A high funding rate is not a profit opportunity, but a sign of extreme market imbalance.

In One Sentence

Funding rate is a periodic fee exchanged between long (buyers betting on price increase) and short (sellers betting on price decrease) traders in perpetual futures. It is not a fee taken by the exchange, but money transferred directly between market participants.

Why Does It Exist?

Perpetual futures contracts have no expiry date. Without an expiration date, there is no natural force to pull the futures price back if it drifts away from the actual spot market price. To solve this, the system is designed so that the expensive side pays the cheaper side.

  • If futures are more expensive than spot (= more longs) → Longs pay Shorts (Positive Funding Rate)
  • If futures are cheaper than spot (= more shorts) → Shorts pay Longs (Negative Funding Rate)

Because traders have to pay this fee, it prevents the market from staying heavily biased toward one side for too long, pulling the futures price back toward the spot price.

How Much Is It?

The default rate is usually 0.01% every 8 hours (about 0.03% per day). If the market becomes heavily biased toward one side, this rate increases.

As of 24 Aug the funding rate on bitcoin perpetual futures was 0.01% per 8h (about 0.03% a day) — At the baseline = longs are not crowded.

The funding interval varies by exchange and trading pair. While 8 hours is the most common, some pairs have intervals of 4 hours or even 1 hour — memorizing it as "fixed at 8 hours" is incorrect.

Is a High Number Good?

No. Hearing that you can "receive 5% a day" might sound attractive, but a gap that wide means money is heavily crowded on one side. In such volatile assets, price movements can easily overwhelm the funding fees. If you open an opposing position just to collect the funding rate, a sudden price move against you can wipe out days' worth of funding fees in a matter of minutes.

Therefore, we should treat the funding rate not as a profit indicator, but as a sign of market imbalance.

  • Near default level = The market is not excessively crowded on one side.
  • Highly positive = A lot of money is betting on a price rise (a structure prone to chain liquidations during a sudden drop).
  • Negative = A lot of money is betting on a price fall (a structure prone to a short squeeze during a sudden spike).

Does It Matter If I Only Trade Spot?

No. Funding rates only exist in futures (perpetual contracts). They do not apply if you simply buy and hold coins in the spot market.
